Billy Idol

Post  Timi on Wed Oct 19, 2011 11:42 pm

Voice type: Baritone
Vocal range: (B1-)C2-C5(-E6)

Significant high notes (Falsetto):

E6 ("White Wedding")
D5 ("Super Overdrive")

Significant high notes (Full):

C5 ("Scream", "Crazy" live)
B4 ("Super Overdrive")
B♭4 ("Super Overdrive", "L.A. Woman", "Screams", "Love Calling", "Jump" live)
A4 ("Flesh for Fantasy", "Jump" live)
G♯4 ("Super Overdrive")
G4 ("John Wayne", "Love Calling", "Plastic Jesus")
F4 ("Rebel Yell", "White Wedding", "Run Rudolph Run", "Scream")

Significant low notes:

C2 ("Blue Christmas", "Plastic Jesus")
E2 ("Sweet Sixteen", "Blue Christmas", "Lady Do Or Die", "The Dead Next Door", "Plastic Jesus")
F2 ("Love Calling")
F♯2 ("L.A. Woman")
G2 ("Love Calling")
A2 ("Sweet Sixteen")
B♭2 ("Scream")
B2 ("John Wayne", "Rebel Yell", "White Wedding")

Great C5s there (thanks to Timmerbo for showing this great performance), he sounded a lot like less powerful version of Graham Bonnet there, I never expected him to sound that great though! I'd call him standard baritone with somewhat untrained low register.

I haven't heard that much of his stuff, but I definitely get the impression that he's more of a high baritone.

Wow, nice find Timi. I think high baritone too, though obviously a baritone. And I agree with the Bonnet comparison. C5 doesn't really sound like his top note.

I think SB's possible, and I'm sure he has more lows. But yeah, I'm leaning towards HB, unless we can find some stronger second octave stuff.

I was under that impression at first but Ray kinda convinced me of him being standard baritone. I could go either way though.

I agree, I was actually pretty impressed by that acapella. He sounds JUST like Bonnet does after he goes up there to hit those Cs. 0:07-0:12 was just like Graham, nailed his tone and style!

Billy is def a lower baritone. Just listen to Sweet sixteen (D2 and E2), the dead next door (E2) and Love calling (F2s). In later years he hits low notes with ease, D2s in Lady do or die, C2s (Plastic jesus) and even B1s (Blue christmas and Run rudolph).

C5s in Super overdrive and Scream (maybe also C#5 in that one) so he has really extended his range in his 50´s, sort of like David Lee Roth.

Those lows aren't very good, definitely not a low baritone's. The B1s are bordering on growl/fry...

But his voice is low-baritonish! Here a mumbles around C2/D2?

Hey those lows were much better than his other ones. Still obviously not a low baritone, though. We consider low baritones to be the same things as basses...that is to say guys like Axl Rose and Peter Steele. Idol is much more of a standard baritone. Lower than a high baritone, but not a bass either.
