Damn great idea, this man is underrated!

I love the solo in "Nothing Else Matters", really melodic and fitting to the song. The acoustic part in "Master of Puppets" is amazing too.

"Sad but True" is my personal favourite by him, so incredibly heavy riff.
One great riff by him is "Fuel". GIMME FUEL, GIMME FIIIIIIIIIRE!

Didn't know he played the solo in "My Friend Of Misery". He also plays the ones in "The House Jack Built" and "Orion", and apparently one of the ones in "Harvester Of Sorrow" and "One".

I've very much started to appreciate Hetfield as a guitarist lately

I don't think he plays Harvester, but One is him and Kirk playing in unison toward the very end.

Just finished listening to the whole Master of Puppets after long time since listening to it. I have to say this:

GOD, THEY HAVE AWESOME COMPOSITIONS! The dark acoustic intro of "Battery", the clean part of "Master of Puppets", the creepy darkness and heaviness of "The Thing That Should Not Be", different phases of "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", great soundscapes of "Orion" and the amazing, unique intro of "Damage Inc." showcase how much artistic skill, imagination and uniqueness they had with their music!

The solos of "Leper Messiah" and "Disposable Heroes" also kick ass, love those sweeps in LM.

He's no shredder but definitely can write great melodic leads.

He also plays a great, Hammett-like solo in "The Ecstasy Of Gold" (tons of wah-wah and pentatonic Grin ). You can hear that and some others here:
